Thoughts on Facebook’s jab at LinkedIn

Amid the mass amounts of election fodder on Twitter this morning, an article from TechCrunch about Facebook’s newest ‘Jobs’ tab caught my attention immediately. The concept is currently being tested on a few company pages, but it allows companies to post current job opportunities within a tab on their page and they have the option to promote the postings through advertising if they choose to do so. It seems obvious Facebook would dive into this new terrain at some point, but it’s still interesting for several reasons.

Facebook’s Landscape Could Change

In comparison, Facebook is a more laid-back and casual environment for users than LinkedIn. If it gains popularity, this may change how much job seekers want to share about their private lives, thoughts or opinions. We know many companies & recruiters scope personal profiles already, but it could have an effect nonetheless.

New Feature = New Ad Revenue Stream

If the feature makes sense and works, why not make money off of it? This brings in a whole new stream of ad revenue that could branch into other streams later on. This feature also encourages users to share more info on Facebook for job searching, which gives Facebook more data for advertisers and could grow ad revenue in streams it already has or new ones. The biggest problem for LinkedIn is it’s size is nothing compared to Facebook’s.

Puts a Direct Target on LinkedIn’s Back

The bottom line is that this is direct shot at LinkedIn, its users and ad revenue. LinkedIn hasn’t made that many changes over the years and Facebook is more user-friendly. LinkedIn’s luck could change since it is being acquired by Microsoft, but time will tell if this could impact LinkedIn in the long run.
