Recently, Social Media Today shared that a new Facebook feature being tested would allow comments to be ‘downvoted’, similar to Reddit.
While this will definitely impact personal posts, social media managers know these will likely impact many of theirs as well, for good and bad reasons.
Good: Unpopular Comments will get Moved Down
Fans who are offended by or disagree with certain comments on a post will downvote it. The good comments will move up as a result. This will generally work in the social media managers favor.
Good and Bad: Popular Comments will go to the top
Depending on the post and your current PR situation, this could go multiple ways. Like I mentioned, a good post could get positive comments and end up voted to the top. A bad post could also get a lot of attention for being poorly thought-out or because the organization is dealing with a PR nightmare from a separate issue. Your audience would end up moving negative comments to the top, which would put your organization in a bad light. It’s safe to say many of us spend all day listing examples of posts going bad for both of these reasons.
Overall, I think it’s a huge positive, but monitoring comments would become more important than ever.
